This old, clapboard house is on rural, historic South Mountain Road, 35 minutes from the George Washington Bridge, 36 miles from Columbus Circle. It belonged to designer, Eva Zeisel. It began as a turn of the century farmhouse, and each person who lived here added to it. For example, in1920, a singing teacheradded a 30 x 40 room, which is now the "big living room" complete with stone fireplace. There is also a cozy "little living room", (14 x 20) with a stone fireplace and wooden beams. Eva herself added wrought iron details, using ornate fire escapes bought from Harlem tenements that were being torn down. The 20 x 20 kitchen, recently renovated, features traditional clay floor tiles, a wall full of windows, wood panelling, stainless steel appliances and patterned granite countertops with natural garnets. The house has three bathrooms, one with a backlit, translucent blue marble wall. In addition, there is a terrace and a back patio, surrounded by woods and natural, overgrown plantings.
The house has been featured in World of Interiors magazine, The Frankurter Allgemeine newspaper (color cover), and in the book, by Leslie Williamson, Handcrafted Modern (vol.1) published by Rizzoli, among other publications.
The driveway accommodates several cars; there is good electricity and space for equipment storage if needed.
